Discover the precursor to contemporary record players
Unlike Edison’s phonograph, which used cylinders, Emile Berliner’s Gramophone recorded on flat discs along a spiral groove running from the periphery to near the center. Gramophone records were easier to mass produce, store, and market. The AMPLab counts a vintage Gramophone, styluses (low, medium, and loud), and a small collection of acoustic records in our audio collection.
Fun fact: In 1899, the Gramophone Company bought the copyright to a painting titled His Master’s Voice, featuring a dog named Nipper listening to a Gramophone, which became the company’s official trademark and logo.

Hear where recorded sound got its start
The acoustic era of recording began with Thomas Edison’s 1877 invention: the phonograph, which allowed sound to be reliably recorded and played back for the first time in history. Sound is captured via a mouthpiece, which vibrates a needle or stylus, making grooves in strips of tinfoil or wax wrapped around the recording cylinder. The recording is then played back using another needle and a horn. The AMPLab is home to an Edison phonograph that plays 2” cylinders through an elegantly painted horn.
Fun fact: The first phonograph recording is of Edison himself reading Mary Had a Little Lamb, which he demonstrated at the offices of leading technical publication Scientific American on December 7, 1877.

Preserve old magnetic recording tapes
It may seem like a strange tool for a sound lab, but this Fisherbrand drying oven offers the stable, uniform temperatures needed to “bake” reel-to-reel tapes—that is, dry out and stabilize degraded reel-to-reel tapes that hold precious audio data prior to playing and digitizing them.
The polymer binder used to adhere the magnetic material to the backing of a reel-to-reel tape can become unstable with time, forming a sticky residue that makes the recording tape virtually unplayable—what audiophiles call “sticky shed syndrome.” By baking these tapes in lab-grade drying ovens over a set period of time, the residue melts back onto the polymer, making the tapes playable once again.

Record on a vintage 1950s-era disc recorder
This rare vintage disc recorder and playback unit is designed to transfer recordings from multiple media sources or live speech onto acetate/polycarbonate discs. The Rek-O-Kut was originally used to produce “working” albums before these were transferred to more durable vinyl albums, making many original acetates rare collectors’ items. The beauty of the recording lathe is that you can record and listen back to your record instantaneously. That’s why records cut on lathes were often called “instantaneous” discs.
Bring a digital recording to the AMP Lab and we can transfer it to poly disc to get that signature crisp yet crackly sound made by the Rek-O-Kut lathe. It’s also a unique opportunity to try out a vintage piece of sound equipment and hold the history of recording in your hands.

Record on steel wire
Released in 1949 using WWII technology, the Electronic Memory model recorded on steel wire and made it possible for people to experiment with audio recording at home—marketed as a means to capture programs, music, speech, family events, and home movies. Features include tone control, automatic stops, a record/listen switch, elapsed time indicator, expanded tonal range, and more, all contained in a portable vintage case. Experiment with wire recordings for a unique kind of magnetic audio output.
Fun fact: The heyday of wire recording lasted only about 3 years—between 1949 to 1952—before magnetic tape overtook the market.
