Uher 4000 Report-L

A portable, open-reel magnetic-tape recorder

A follow-up to the popular Uher Report-S, this model was widely used by TV and radio broadcast journalists in the early 1960s. The Report-L included all the features of its predecessor, along with a 3-digit index counter, picture-window top for tape observation, piano-key controls, calibrated VU metre, and a one-plug mic connection. It was also designed with a quieter, more powerful motor, built-in belt cleaning brushes, illuminated features, and other improvements.

Fun fact: Czechoslovakian secret services used Uher tape recorders as part of an electronic dead-letter box or dead drop, allowing a secret agent to record and deliver a high-speed spoken message without having to physically meet their handler.
