Sony 101 Tapecorder reel to reel

Vintage recording portability

In the late 50s and early 60s, Sony released a portable, transistorized mono half-track tape recorder marketed as a way to capture music, conversations, and other audio on the go. This vintage tapecorder uses 7” reels and features 2 speeds (7 ½ and 3 ¾ ips), a built-in amp, VU meter, pause control, 15-ohm speaker, mike and line mixing, and dynamic microphone. Contained in a portable case, the Sony 101 tapecorder can be used to experiment with vintage recording technology both at the AMPLab and for audio fieldwork. This has been a field workhorse for the ongoing “Poetry by Memory” recording project.
