Discover the precursor to contemporary record players
Unlike Edison’s phonograph, which used cylinders, Emile Berliner’s Gramophone recorded on flat discs along a spiral groove running from the periphery to near the center. Gramophone records were easier to mass produce, store, and market. The AMPLab counts a vintage Gramophone, styluses (low, medium, and loud), and a small collection of acoustic records in our audio collection.
Fun fact: In 1899, the Gramophone Company bought the copyright to a painting titled His Master’s Voice, featuring a dog named Nipper listening to a Gramophone, which became the company’s official trademark and logo.
