Discover this unique space dedicated to the practice of literary sound studies. The AMPLab holds equipment for the digitization of audio from a wide range of media formats, as well as for audio analysis and production. Our main focus is on sound recordings that document literary performances, events, and activities. We collect, digitize, process, preserve, describe, share, and transform literary sound recordings in order to experiment with new ways of understanding literary history through sonic artifacts and the methods they demand.
Explore our extensive collection of equipment, which includes c1900 Edison phonograph, Victor gramophone, 1950s Rek-O-Kut recording lathe, numerous reel-to-reel tape machines, and the very latest digital recording and conversion technology.
Book an appointment with one of our techs for an AMPLab tour, or ask how your own sound studies project might benefit from use of the lab. We’re excited to learn about your research and eager to support new projects with our equipment!
